Kinja'd!!!

I’m heading to Breckenridge to do some winter sports with a bunch of my buds for my bachelor party next month. We have been kicking around the idea of renting a car(s) rather than taking a shuttle from Denver, but I’m wondering if it will be more of a hassle to have to worry about a car if it snows.

I’m confident driving in the snow, but my experience in snow is limited to the east coast in between Philadelphia and Burlington VT. We rented a car in Tahoe a few years ago, but it was a Suburban and it didn’t snow while we were there. If we rent this time, it will likely be 1, 2, or 3 smaller cars as we are flying in from all over the country.

This will be my first trip to Colorado, so what’s the deal? Dumb idea to rent a car? Do we need an SUV? What is it like driving from Breck to Denver in the snow?

If you’ve driven around Burlington when there’s a good amount of snow you should be fine anywhere. VT is never in any rush to clear up anything besides 89

Try Silvercar if you’re renting out of the airport. Fleet of Audi A4s (w/ quattro) and wound up being the same price as renting a POS from any of the big rental agencies. Search for a first time promo code and it should wind up being somewhere around $50 a day. I’ll be headed that direction to ski here in a few weeks and it’s what I’ll be doing.

Lol that was my recommendation too. A4 Quattro, can’t beat it. My aunt went this route after Enterprise royally fucked her over.

Thanks for suggesting this. I have a similar trip planned at the end of the month. I canceled my Versa, reserved an A4, and saved $60. The minimum age being 22 was a huge help for me since I'm 3 months short of 25.

Denver to Breck in the snow is essentially 1 road, I-70 from the airport runs all the way there. It’s cleared pretty well, but will always be congested and slow.

Probably my only advice is that they seem to be kicking up enforcement of the traction laws. When snowing they are supposedly ticketing, or preventing you from traveling further if you don’t have chains OR snow tyres OR awd/4wd. So perhaps something to keep in mind when picking your rental.

As far as whether you need one? I’d guess no. Breck is a small town, easily walkable, and has public transport around it anyway. Including transport to nearby towns with more restuarant options etc.

Buses are few and far between. Most people who don’t rent a car take the (expensive) CME vans

I’d suggest renting a car, I70 can be terrifying if you’re not used to mountains and it snows, and traffic can terrible but would be that much cheaper and more easy.

Nice! Better car for less money is always good. Be sure to do a write up about it here to help any other Oppos who might be interested or haven’t heard of Silver Car before. I’ve known about it for a while before JBH wrote about it.

Really? The summit express says there are shuttles every hour from 8 til 10

I meant bus are rare, shuttles (vans) are pretty much the only way to go. That Summit Express is a pretty fair deal at roughly $100 per person, which is about what you’d spend going in on a minivan rental for 5 days or so.
